Ground has been broken on Phase 2 of the Souq Extra retail hub in Dubai Silicon Oasis.

Architecture and design outfit, RMJM, revealed that Phase 1 of the mixed-use development had also officially opened.

Phase 2 of the Dubai Academic Road project will entail the extension of Souq Extra’s community mall, and the construction of a mosque.

RMJM will provide full architectural, interior design, and lead consultancy services for Phase 2.

The new retail mall will have a built-up area of 7,500m2, and feature a glass façade, while the mosque will be developed to house 300 worshippers.

Commenting on the project in a statement on its website, RMJM said: “Full consideration has also been given to the contrasting commercial and religious aspects of the retail and mosque designs, with the latter expected to strike a perfect balance between modern and traditional.”

Design and construction work for Phase 2 is due to complete within “one calendar year”, RMJM said.

The Phase 2 mosque will be RMJM's second such delivery in 2019, its statement explained, adding that the company is also working on the DIFC Grand Mosque in Grand Avenue.

Last December, Nasdaq Dubai-listed ENBD REIT acquired the property from Souq Extra for $57m (AED210m).

In a statement, the real estate investment trust revealed that Phase 1 closed at $23m (AED84m), and that it would acquire Phase 2 upon its completion as well.
