A $122m (AED447m) contract has been awarded to link the Deira Islands development with Dubai’s mainland.

Wade Adams Contracting is developing the 12-lane, 600m bridge through its contract with Nakheel. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is supervising the work.

The deal brings the total value of Deira Islands’ infrastructure and construction contract spend to $2.3bn (AED8.5bn).

Construction activities on the bridge began this May, with completion set for Q2 2020.

Starting at the Al Khaleej Road on Dubai’s mainland, the bridge extends towards Deira Islands A, which houses Nakheel projects such as the waterfront master development’s Night Souk, the Deira Mall, and the Riu and Centara resorts. All these projects are currently under construction.

When it opens in 2020, the bridge will provide the main access route to the 15.3km2 waterfront city.

Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel, more deals were “on the way” for the project, WAM reported.

He added: “We thank the RTA for its ongoing assistance and cooperation for our transport links at Deira Islands.”
