The Italian construction company that built a section of Turkey's Istanbul Metro has won work worth on India's upcoming Mumbai Metro.
A joint venture (JV) comprising Astaldi and Indian construction heavyweight, Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RIL), has been picked to construct three lots of the Mumbai Metro Rail Project (MMRP).
Astaldi's JV will work on the Wadala-Kasarwadavali section of MMRP's North-South Metro Line 4.
The total value of the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract is worth $207m (EUR168m), of which Astaldi's share is $103.5m (EUR84m).
As part of the EPC deal, the Astaldi-RIL JV will design and develop 20km of railway viaducts, and 18 elevated stations.
Work is expected to span 30 months, with start-up following the official contract signing, which is due shortly.
MMRP is Astaldi's first project in India, and the Italian company said the development "strengthens its de-risking policy".
Astaldi and RIL are also "assessing additional opportunities at the local level in the transport infrastructure sector".
For the Istanbul Metro project, Astaldi built a 22km underground line linking Kadikoy to Kartal, between 2008 and 2012.
Tunnels for the project were excavated using traditional methods, as well as with the help of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), while the links between tunnels and junctions were built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).
More recently, Astaldi – through its 15% stake in a JV with Turkish companies – was awarded an EPC contract to carry out the civil works and implement the electromechanical systems of the Kirazli-Halkalı section of the Istanbul Underground network.
The project requires the construction of a 10km double-tube tunnel – 7km of which is being dug using a TBM – as well as nine stations with annexed car parks, and a depot area.
Construction on the project began in 2017.
Astaldi's other projects in the Middle East include the Yanbu Acetic Acid Plant in Saudi Arabia, which was designed to produce 30,844 tonnes of acetic acid per year.
The Italian company's scope on the project included the delivery of civil works, three buildings, steel structural works, electromechanical plants, and instruments.
