Two Middle East buildings have beaten-off challenges from over 80 of the world’s best new dry-lining projects to win top honours in the Saint-Gobain International Trophy, held in Lisbon on 23 March, 2018.
Masdar City’s Neighbourhood One Residences and the Midfield Terminal Building at Abu Dhabi Airport, were voted best new dry-lining projects in the world in two of the competition’s six categories, beating 85 other finalists from throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa.
Success in the competition, which is open to all new and refurbishment projects utilising Saint-Gobain Gyproc plastering and dry-lining systems, which have been commenced and completed in the last two years, brings international acclaim for the two projects, and underlines the outstanding quality of workmanship and design currently being achieved by leading drywall contractors across the Middle East.
To gain top honours, drywall specialists Plafond &Ishtar Décor, whose Neighbourhood One Residences were overall winners in the competition’s Innovation & Sustainability category, delivered exceptional workmanship and detailing to internal walls and linings throughout the 500-unit residential development, in order to meet Masdar City’s extremely demanding LEED Gold and 3 Pearl Estidama sustainability criteria.
At the Midfield Terminal Building, contractor International Decor Co. LLC, was challenged to provide internal partitions and linings, up to 52 metres high in places, for the massive 1.1 km, 6-storey steel frame terminal building – capable of accommodating 3-full-size football pitches. What they achieved to win the competition’s Non-residential category was exceptional by any standard, with the superb quality and finish to the massive internal spaces more than matching the building’s stunning exterior aesthetic.
Success in the 11th biennial competition follows previous success for the Middle East in the 2014 Trophy, when Al Mafraq Hospital walked away with one of the top honours – the President’s Prize, a special discretionary award for outstanding application of Gyproc drylining products and systems.
To achieve entry in the International competition, Neighbourhood One Residences and Midfield Terminal had first to achieve category wins in last year’s first-ever Saint-Gobain Middle East Trophy – beating off challenges from 44 other local projects.
“This is an outstanding result”, said Gyproc Middle East Managing Director, Paul Button, “proving not only that Gyproc drywall systems are now providing winning interiors for region’s best building projects, but that the skills and experience of the Middle East’s drywall contractors now ranks amongst the best anywhere in the world.”
