A new smart calculator to measure the environmental impact of concrete used in construction projects has been developed by Dubai Municipality's Buildings Department.

The tool is part of the department’s initiative, ‘Dubai Baseline for Sustainable Concrete’, and the reading compares it to the baseline that was developed by the department previously.

“Dubai Municipality seeks to nurture and support innovation to achieve its strategic direction towards improving the level of buildings, and to have continuous improvement and development, in line with the strategic objectives of the Government of Dubai,” said Eng. Layali Al Mulla, Director of Buildings Department.

This initiative, Al Mulla says, will encourage the construction sector to create new concrete mixtures and use alternative materials for cement to reduce the impact of the mixture on the environment.

Eng. Fida Al Hammadi, head of research and building systems section in the Buildings Department at Dubai Municipality said the calculator will be available for use in prefabricated concrete factories, consultants and contractors within a few weeks.

“The user can enter the materials used in the calculator and their ratios during the manufacturing process of concrete to determine the level of environmental impact,” Al Hammadi added.
