Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a nearly $53m (AED193m) contract for the improvement of Al Awir Road, part of the entrance to Phase 2 of the International City Project.

The scope will include the improvement of intersections through the widening of flyovers and expansion of the number of lanes to increase the ease of traffic in the area.

Phase 2 will include an upgrade of the intersection of Al Manama Street with the entrance of International City through the conversion of a surface signalised junction, enabling free movement in all directions.

Works include constructing of a three lane flyover in each direction to allow traffic to cross freely over Al Manama Street, increasing capacity by 4,500 vehicles per hour to 6,000 vehicles per hour.

Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said: “The Project is undertaken in collaboration with Nakheel, the master developer of the International City, in the light of the traffic impacts study commissioned for the International City and the Dragon Mart, especially after the opening of the extension of the Dragon Mart and the anticipated snarls in the area.”

RTA began construction works on Phase 1 of Al Awir Road and entrance of the International City Improvement Project in April 2016.

Completion rate of the project has so far reached 75%, and is expected to be opened in the first quarter of 2018.

Phase 1 of the project includes improvement works of Al Awir Road starting from the intersection of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the R/A of the  Academic City.

The first phase will also include the construction of a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists to ease movement between Al Warqaa and International City to business districts including Dragon Mart and the Vegetables Market.
