The King Fahd Causeway Authority has signed a $44.7mn (SAR168mn) contract for the operation, maintenance and complete testing of the causeway.

The winning firm should execute the contract over its 26km from the toll gates on the Saudi Arabian side to the toll gates on the Bahraini side, including all of its related facilities, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN).

King Fahd Causeway was opened in 1986 following a construction process that cost $800mn (SAR3bn).

Plans to expand the causeway were announced in 2009, while a rail link (as part of the planned GCC railway network) running parallel to the causeway had been scheduled for completion in 2018.
