Abu Dhabi City Municipality has announced that it will open a new, modern slaughterhouse complex in Al Wathba this month.
The $43.6m facility, which won a MENA-wide award for having the best equipment, modern installations and livestock barns, also includes a shopping mall and markets for livestock.
Khalifa Al Rumaithi, director of the public health department, said the Al Wathba slaughterhouse is the first of its kind in the region, comprising 20 outlets, 48 livestock barns and two fully air-conditioned markets designed to international standards, for the sale of sheep and camel.
As part of the municipal plan to convert all manual abattoirs into modern automated slaughterhouses, the Shahama Modern Slaughterhouse is also being established.
The slaughterhouses section at the municipality expects to finalise the building, construction and preparation work for the facility and bring it into operation in the second half of 2014.
